Artist’s impression of colliding neutron stars: After having spiraled around each other for hundreds of millions of years, two compact neutron stars finally merge, emitting energetic radiation in narrow jets. If we happen to lie along the direction of such a jet, we may detect it as a gamma-ray burst.
