Over the past five years, substantial progress has been made in electrochemical nitrate reduction, particularly in achieving high Faraday efficiency and current density for ammonia production. This perspective, however, sheds light on critical but often overlooked challenges, such as sustainable nitrate supply, maintaining species balance, addressing mass transfer limitations, and ensuring catalyst stability. These challenges, when overcome, could significantly advance the field of electrochemical nitrate reduction.
