Watching the electron dance in TiSe2 (IMAGE)

Left: quantum mechanical simulation of the energies allowed for the electrons before laser irradiation. The blue region means absence of electronic state, the white and red ones symbolize electronic energy levels. As it can be seen, in the region from -0.2 and 0 electron volt (eV) there are no energy states explainining the semiconducting nature of TiSe2. Right: The same but after ultrafast excitation. There are now states between -0.2 and 0 eV and the system has become a semimetal.
