Microstructural evolution of the YZ cross-section simulated using the ExaCA model (IMAGE)
Caption
The figure shows the evolution of the microstructure of the melt pool under the influence of the simulated transient temperature field. Nucleated grains are represented in pink-purple plots, while epitaxial grains appear in red-blue plots. Simulated equiaxed crystalline microstructure transformed to liquid state (blue) during the melting process. The columnar grains grow in the normal direction along the fusion line, and a strong competitive growth phenomenon occurs due to the reduction of the growth space. As solidification proceeds, the newly nucleated grains begin to hinder the growth of the initial columnar grains, resulting in the formation of finer equiaxed grains.
