Genetic Collapse of Chorion Formation in Egg-Caring Fish Lineages (IMAGE)
Caption
Researchers from Institute of Science Tokyo present the underlying reasons behind the evolutionary bias in reproductive strategies of egg-care species. Using 240 whole genome sequences of fish species in the Acanthopterygii superorder, the researchers examined the relationship between the chorion-hardening system and the transition towards egg-care. Their findings reveal a complete and irreversible collapse of the chorion-hardening system in egg-care species, trapping them in an evolutionary dead-end.
