Chain of the symbiotic diatom with its N2 fixing cyanobacterial symbiont. In the brightfield (top) the symbiont is inconspicuous inside the host, whereas with epi-fluorescence (bottom) the filaments of the symbionts (arrows) are easily distinguished.
