During carcinogenesis, the HPV genome integrates into the host genome, often disrupting the E2 gene, which normally suppresses E6 and E7 expression. HPV integration can occur randomly in the host genome, but the overexpression of E6 and E7 from a single integration site drives clonal expansion.
