Reduced ecological footprint (IMAGE)
Caption
Reduced ecological footprint: Ores mined in the deep sea (left) can be reduced with a hydrogen plasma in an electric arc furnace, after drying. This produces manganese oxides and a manganese- and silicon-containing slag, as well as an alloy containing nickel and cobalt. The process produces significantly less CO2 than the conventional coal-based process, in which the ores must also be dried and roasted with coal before the actual coal reduction.
