Naba Krishna Das at work in Deepak Koirala's lab at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Das and Koirala are first and senior authors, respectively, on a new paper published in Nature Communications that uncovers how enteroviruses—including those causing polio, myocarditis, encephalitis, and the common cold—hijack host cell machinery to replicate. The highly conserved RNA-protein interaction they found across all seven enteroviruses in their study presents the tantalizing prospect of a “universal” drug targeting all enteroviruses.
