Simulation of fluid distribution in healthy and septic sheep

Simulation of the distribution of 1.5 L of isotonic saline infused over 30 min in (A) healthy awake sheep and (B) septic anesthetized sheep. No effects of adrenergic receptor stimulation are included. Note that in healthy sheep, there is no fluid distribution to the Vt2, the third space. Conversely, during sepsis, the “third space” is the primary compartment for fluid accumulation.
