"Chaotic dynamics" in active soft materials (IMAGE)
Caption
Modeling work from researchers at the University of Michigan showed how soft materials could achieve life-like movements such as shivers and twitches with force-sensitive chemical reactions. This graph characterizes the chaotic motion of a perturbation to the material. Although the motion is constrained to a sort of figure-8 space, it also doesn't return to its initial state. A fiber network in the background illustrates stress-sensitive chemical reactions and their feedback to mechanics.
