Conceptual diagram showing the temporal pattern of soil priming and the effect of nitrogen addition on SOC mineralization. The entire incubation period was separated into two stages according to the temporal variation of soil priming. Glucose addition could increase soil MBC content, SOC-derived DOC content or extracellular enzyme activities. The responses of these parameters were used to explain the generation of the soil priming. The donut graph in the figure represented the contributions of these responses on the priming in each stage, and residuals near the donut represent the unexplained variation. Nitrogen addition could decrease soil pH, MBC content and enzyme activities, which then regulate SOC mineralization. Ccontrol and Cnitrogen are the accumulated released carbon derived from SOC in control and N treatments. PGlu and PGluN are the amount of primed SOC in glucose without and with nitrogen addition treatments.
