Laser-engineered Ru@C catalyst enables self-powered hydrazine-assisted hydrogen production. This schematic illustrates the pulsed-laser fabrication of Ru@C core–shell nanoparticles from ruthenium plates and decomposed acetone, forming highly active dual-functional catalysts. The Ru@C-200 material drives both hydrogen evolution and hydrazine oxidation, enabling low-voltage hydrazine-splitting electrolysis. When integrated into a rechargeable Zn–hydrazine battery, the catalyst supports self-powered hydrogen generation using renewable electricity from solar cells.
