Simulation of fluid distribution in healthy and septic sheep (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic simulation illustrating the distribution of 1.5 litres of isotonic saline infused over 30 minutes in (A) healthy, awake sheep and (B) septic, anaesthetised sheep. In healthy sheep, infused fluid remains largely within the intravascular and interstitial compartments, with no accumulation in the third space (Vt2). In contrast, during sepsis, the third space becomes the dominant compartment for fluid accumulation, reflecting altered vascular permeability and fluid handling. Adrenergic receptor stimulation is not included in the simulation.
