Fly treadmill (VIDEO)
Caption
A pin-tethered fly (shown enlarged) walking on a spherical treadmill within a virtual reality set up in the Maimon lab. The blue bar on the LED display provides the fly a visual sense of its orientation in the environment and the green tubes indicate the direction of airflow within the environment. Presenting both visual and airflow stimuli together helped the team discover how neurons use two types of electrical spikes to compute directions in their environment.
