Iceberg South Pacific (IMAGE)
Caption
The examined drill core comes from the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, where icebergs were occasionally drifting at the time of drilling in 2001. During the last interglacial period, the disintegration of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet created a large number of icebergs in this region. As they drifted northwards and melted, they released trapped minerals grains which sank to the seafloor.
