Mouse embryos viewed through different culture dishes look differently (IMAGE)
Caption
Mouse embryos viewed through different culture dishes look differently. In polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dishes [left (red)], mismatch in optical properties causes distortion. Moreover, manufacturing artifacts appear as visible "ridges" (red arrows), and the image is blurry. In the new "index-matched" agarose dishes [right (green)], the dish structure effectively disappears. This provides a clear view, allowing embryologists to evaluate critical internal features such as the blastocyst cavity (blue asterisk) and trophectoderm cells (red asterisk). Scale bar: 20 µm.
