Pulling some methodological tricks: Based on brain organoids such as this one – i.e., three-dimensional replicas of the brain measuring only a few millimeters in diameter – the researchers tested the effect of sildenafil in the laboratory. The organoids were grown from patient stem cells, thereby mimicking the clinical picture of Leigh syndrome. Red: neural progenitor cells; blue: nerve cells.
