How researchers propose to search for dark matter. The torsion balance is a geometrically asymmetric structure with a hollow “spherical shell” on the left and a “solid sphere” on the right. The impact of an individual scattering event involving extremely light dark matter particles on the torsion balance is tiny, but frequent scattering by a large number of dark matter particles could collectively create a measurable acceleration.
