Bad country road in Wales (IMAGE)
Caption
An artist travelling in Wales, by Thomas Rowlandson (1799).
An artist struggles to ride on horseback over a rough, dangerous, hilly country road in Wales which has not been turnpiked.
Before the turnpikes, the worst roads were in the Southwest, Wales, and the North of England. Turnpikes had the biggest impact in these areas. Turnpike roads both facilitated and were increasingly funded by tourism, as more affluent people sought to explore Wales, the Lake District and the Southwest.
