By analyzing sediment cores from Lake Kopello, located high in Africa's Rwenzori Mountains, researchers have reconstructed wildfire activity in the region dating back to the last ice age. The research showed that a recent fire in the Rwenzoris was the first large-scale fire in the range's highest altitudes in 12,000 years.
