From plastic waste to resistance threat – how leachates drive ARG spread. Sunlight-aged PVC releases leachates rich in labile dissolved organic matter and additives. These chemical mixtures trigger bacterial oxidative stress, SOS repair, and enhanced cell–cell contact, boosting conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from donors to recipients in aquatic microbiomes.
