Queen bumblebees that survive winter have to start colonies from scratch every year, foraging alone until they can raise enough worker bees to sustain the colony. Research by Felicity Muth and Melanie Kimball at UC Davis shows that bumblebee queens are better at learning the scents of flowers than workers. On left is a queen bumblebee, worker bee at right.
