Polarized light micrograph of chondrules (IMAGE)
Caption
An SwRI-led study modeled the concentration, assembly and preservation of millimeter-sized, spherical mineral grains known as chondrules, shown here in polarized light, within the parent bodies of the most common meteorites. The model connects chondrule production and assembly through the dynamics of planet formation. Giant impacts generate circum-embryo disks that concentrate and corral chondrules into chondrule-rich satellites. Then orbital liberation turns these primordial moons into the meteorite‑producing asteroids seen today.
