Air-stable surface electrene Ru/BaSiN2:O (IMAGE)
Caption
Ru/BaSiN2:O contains a layer of floating electrons on its surface. During ammonia synthesis, the material is first exposed to N2, which forms a temporary nitrogen passivation layer that protects the material from air. On subsequent exposure to hydrogen, the nitrogen is hydrogenated and removed as ammonia.
