New nanocarbons with surprising shapes and properties (IMAGE)
Caption
A new family of chiral nanocarbons shaped like a figure-eight (top middle), a bathtub (bottom left) and double helix (bottom right). Chiral molecules exist in left- and right-handed forms, like a pair of hands. Researchers used skeletal editing to build these complex carbon molecules. The double-helix molecule also self-assembles into crystals with chiral pores that trap and release carbon dioxide.
