Poorer people suffer greater declines in physical function as they age (IMAGE)

Associations between wealth and functional ageing trajectories for gait speed, grip strength, and lung function in ELSA and CLSA. Lines represent predicted trajectories estimated from the mixed-effects models. Note that the y axes have been inverted for consistency of presentation across outcomes. Mixed-effects models included age, age2, birth year, as well as sex, race, height (gait speed and grip strength only), wealth, and their interaction with linear age as covariates. ELSA=English Longitudinal Study of Ageing; CLSA=Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging; FEV=Forced Expiratory Volume.
