The multifunctional coupling characteristics and diverse applications of transparent ferroelectric ceramics (IMAGE)

The schematic illustrates how optical transparency can be coupled with piezoelectric, electro-optic, energy-storage, photoluminescent and photochromic functions in ferroelectric ceramics. It also summarizes demonstrated and prospective applications, including photoacoustic imaging, electro-optic switching and modulation, transparent energy-storage components, smart windows, optical sensing, information storage and transparent actuation. Some device concepts shown in the review are currently demonstrated using related single-crystal, thin-film or glass platforms and serve as benchmarks for future ceramic integration.
