How chain-forming STEC strains of E. coli spread. The team discovered that single bacterial cells can adhere and form chains on surfaces. Under a flow, these elongated structures can be torn off, leaving the free segment to adhere somewhere else before growing again. This strategy allows bacteria to spread over wider areas using flow.
