Stacking-fault engineering enables active fracture regulation and synergistic hardening–toughening in diamond (IMAGE)
Caption
By constructing anisotropic lamellar structures in graphite precursors and inheriting them into diamond, a high-density network of oriented stacking faults is pre-introduced. These faults act as intrinsic stress-responsive units that reconstruct in situ at crack tips, enabling simultaneous hardening and toughening with enhanced thermal stability. This work provides a paradigm for active fracture regulation in covalent superhard materials.
