Conceptual diagram illustrating depth-dependent microbial regulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions during temperate forest succession. Declining particulate organic carbon (POC) is primarily linked to yield-growth (Y) strategies via fungal (FNC) and bacterial (BNC) necromass dynamics. Mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) accumulation is regulated by a shift away from resource acquisitive (A) strategies in topsoil, whereas it is predominantly driven by microbial necromass (FNC and BNC) inputs in subsoil.
