Planetary shock (IMAGE)
Caption
University of Iowa physicists have made the most detailed observations of Jupiter’s bow shock, a barrier that helps deflect harmful particles from the sun. The illustration shows how Jupiter employs a series of regions, called shocklets, to engage with the solar wind and slow it down before it meets the planet's main bow shock.
