When AlphaFold failed, evolution supplied the missing information (VIDEO)

David Stern, Ph.D., Investigator at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, explains how researchers used evolutionary information from closely related aphid species to help AlphaFold2 correctly predict the structures of rapidly evolving BICYCLE proteins. The work revealed a shared structural blueprint across approximately 2,400 proteins and a method that may help scientists investigate other fast-evolving proteins involved in immunity and host-parasite interactions.
