From Arctic winter sea ice to East Asian summer heat: a stratospheric bridge (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic of the cross-seasonal pathway linking winter NFI in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic to the position of the summer East Asian jet stream. Excess NFI enhances the upward propagation of planetary waves into the stratosphere, weakens the polar vortex, and advances the stratospheric final warming. The ensuing anomalous anticyclone in the polar stratosphere descends through the stratosphere–troposphere system during late spring and summer, shifting the East Asian jet southward, and suppresses heatwaves over subtropical China.
