Hollow rare-earth-containing high-entropy carbide nanoparticles for hydrogen evolution (IMAGE)
Caption
Hollow (HfNbTaTiZr)C, (HfNbTaTiZrRE)C (RE=Gd, Ce, Y) and (HfNbTaTiZrCeY)C high-entropy carbide nanoparticles synthesized by one-pot electroreduction in molten CaCl2-NaCl at 800 °C. The particles exhibit a single face-centered cubic phase and compositional homogeneity from the nanoscale to the microscale. The microstructure is tailored from solid to hollow simply by changing the carbon source. The hollow architecture, combined with dual-rare-earth incorporation, delivers a low HER overpotential of 167 mV at 10 mA·cm-2, a Tafel slope of 58.8 mV·dec-1 and a charge-transfer resistance of 2.7 Ω in alkaline electrolyte.
