Polar vortices (IMAGE)

The image shows the periodic polar vortices in a BaTiO₃-SrTiO3 superlattice on silicon. Superimposed on the HAADF-STEM image, which was taken of a [100] BaTiO3 cut lamellae of the superlattice, is a map showing the corresponding displacements of the element titanium. The yellow arrows indicate the direction and magnitude of the Ti displacement.
