This is Lake Challa in the early morning hours with ice-covered Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. The little white dot on the lake is the sediment core drilling platform. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 5, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. C. Wolff of Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GeoForschungsZentrum (German Research Center for Geosciences) in Potsdam, Germany, and colleagues was titled, "Reduced Interannual Rainfall Variability in East Africa During the Last Ice Age."
