The spike protein on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 virions mediates entry into target cells. It Is the main target for neutralizing antibodies that are produced following infection or vaccination. In case of the B.1.617 variant, the spike protein has acquired mutations that increase efficiency of virus entry into cells and reduce sensitivity to antibody-mediated neutralization.
