In a video he released in November 2018, Jiankui He explained his rationale for CRISPR editing embryos in vitro and then implanting the embryos in a Chinese woman. The artificial insemination resulted in the birth last year of two apparently healthy girls with genetic mutations in the CCR5 gene that are now linked to a significant increase in mortality.
