Tobacco hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) on a prototype with an artificial white flower. Later experiments used a test apparatus with a built-in video camera and a blue acrylic flower that was visually attractive enough to attract the moths without being fragrant from a distance. The moth could only detect the odor when it stuck its proboscis into the flower. This experimental approach ensured that potential odor learning would be limited entirely to the proboscis.
