Nuclei of the skin cells (blue) and the outermost layer of the skin (green), the horny layer, which shows a characteristic thickening in atopic dermatitis. In addition to structural proteins, it contains lipids and moisturizing factors, which are not sufficiently present in atopic dermatitis. The section was stained with hematoxylin and the colors subsequently processed.
