Healing from lung injury (IMAGE)
Caption
A team from Penn Vet found that, even a year after lung injury, basal cells—marked in green and red and normally found in the airway—could be found deeper in the lung, where gas-exchange cells typically reside. Believed to contribute to impaired lung function, this ectopic growth could be redirected by blocking the activity of the protein p63, a potential therapeutic target.
