Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) on a milkweed plant (IMAGE)
Caption
Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) on a milkweed plant. The herbivores, which are host plant specialists, ingest plant toxins and store them in their bodies. Their bright colouration signals to predators that they are toxic. However, storing plant toxins is also physiologically costly for this species.
