In a new study published in PNAS, investigators at Harrington Discovery Institute and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine showed that a modified version of hemoglobin, termed S-nitrosohemoglobin, senses areas with insufficient oxygen, and then restores blood flow for oxygenation.
