ATE1 enzymatic function (IMAGE)
Caption
An illustration of the basic function of the enzyme ATE1. ATE1 effects the transfer of arginine (small green circle) from a tRNA (blue blob, left) to another protein (blue blob, right). A new paper in Nature Communications finds that ATE1 binds iron-sulfur clusters (red and yellow circles at left), which dramatically increase its efficacy. The same paper found that ATE1 is sensitive to oxygen, indicating it may moderate the cell's response to oxidative stress. (Illustration by Verna Van)
