Specific regions of the brain that are damaged by high blood pressure and are involved in a decline in mental processes and dementia (IMAGE)
Caption
3D reconstruction show how high systolic blood pressure has affected the main tracts of white matter in the brain. The red shows the areas most affected by high blood pressure while the yellow areas are also affected but to a lesser extent. The study shows that high systolic blood pressure causes damage to the white matter and its connections with other parts of the brain and this is linked to worse cognitive functions in the people analysed. For the first time, specific brain areas which are the culprit of this disease are identified.
