Production of energy through a high-efficient way is highly attractive due to the worldwide energy and environment crisis, for which the two-dimensional (2D) nanolamellars are expected to offer a solution through the electrocatalytic route. To fulfill the application requirements, efforts must be paid on improving the performance of these earth-abundant 2D materials. Herein, recent advances of the design and performance of 2D electrocatalysts based on the local electronic regulation strategies were summarized.
