Removing defects reveals a nickelate superconductor's true nature (IMAGE)

Colorized electron microscope images reveal defects in the atomic structure of a nickelate superconductor (left) compared to a defect-free structure (right). By eliminating the defects, SLAC and Stanford researchers improved the material's superconductivity and were able to see its true properties for the first time.
