Figure 1. Biosynthesis of O-methylated stilbenes. In sorghum, SOMT converts resveratrol to pinostilbene and pterostilbene which are O-methylated in the stilbene A-ring. In wild sugarcane, a COMT likely converts piceatannol to isorhapontigenin which is O-methylated in the stilbene B-ring. O-methylation is a common modification that increases potency and bioavailability of phytochemicals. O-methylated groups are indicated in pink.
