The Vilcek Foundation and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation are currently seeking nominations for the 2022 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, January 24, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare recognizes immigrant healthcare professionals whose work demonstrates an outstanding commitment to humanistic and community-centered care. The 2022 award includes a commemorative heart-shaped trophy and an unrestricted cash award of $10,000.

Mission and Vision

The award is a joint initiative between the Vilcek Foundation and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation that honors the mission and values of both organizations. The Vilcek Foundation recognizes and celebrates the myriad contributions immigrants make to science, medicine, and society in the United States. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation champions humanism in healthcare, which they define as “compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care that places the interests, values, and dignity of all people at the core of teaching and practice.”

Past Recipients

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare was first presented in 2019. Past recipients include pediatrician and Flint whistleblower Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha (b. United Kingdom), Dr. Vivek Murthy, 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States (b. United Kingdom), and Pre-Health Dreamers cofounders Dr. Jirayut “New” Latthivongskorn (b. Thailand) and Denisse Rojas Marquez (b. Mexico).

Nomination Procedure

Nominations may be submitted via the nomination form on the Arnold P. Gold Foundation website. Nominators will be required to answer short questions and submit a copy of their selected nominee’s CV or resume, and to write two essays regarding the candidate and how their work aligns with the mission and values of the Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must have been born outside of the United States to non-American parents, and must work professionally in healthcare, medicine, or public health. Candidates’ professional work should demonstrate their commitment to humanism.

To be eligible, nominees must be based in the United States, and intend to continue their career in the United States.
